Montecristi Indiana Panama Hat – Australian Style Toquilla Straw
FAQS about Panama Hats
An authentic Panama Hat is truly handcrafted in Ecuador from the finest Toquilla straw (Carludovica palmata). The authenticity lies in its origin, the traditional weaving process passed down through generations, and the use of genuine Ecuadorian straw. Our hats come directly from the artisans in Ecuador.
Toquilla straw is a natural fiber derived from the leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant, native to the coastal regions of Ecuador. It's renowned for its flexibility, durability, and fine texture, making it the ideal material for weaving the breathable, lightweight, and long-lasting Panama Hats.
The grades refer to the fineness of the weave, determined by the number of individual strands per inch.
- Fine: A more open weave, typically quicker to produce.
- Extra Fine: A denser weave, softer feel, and greater durability.
- Super Fine: An even tighter, more intricate weave, resulting in a very smooth, luxurious finish.
- Golden: The highest grade, with an exceptionally tight and uniform weave, often taking months to a year to produce, making them incredibly lightweight and flexible. Higher grades indicate more time, skill, and finer straw used in the weaving process.
While genuine Panama Hats are known for their flexibility, not all grades are suitable for rolling without potential damage. Only finer weaves (Extra Fine, Super Fine, Golden) can be carefully rolled for short periods for travel. We recommend consulting our specific product pages or Care Guide for instructions on how to roll a hat properly and avoid creases.

I had some questions which they answered promptly and then I ordered a Montecristi “Australian-style” Panama with 22 grade weave. They were also able to swap out a different hatband for me. I received it in about 10 days. I own several Panama hats and this one is the best!
It’s beautifully made, nice tight weave, the right shape, proportions, and it fits perfectly. I’ll definitely be a repeat customer!
